Overview
The Ground Controller is the conductor of launch operations — ensuring that all launches are safe, efficient, and well-documented, while maintaining clear communication between air and ground crews. It is a managerial role that requires awareness, coordination, and strong communication skills.
A copy of this document will be kept in the Weekend Ground Controller Folder, along with the “Duty of Care and Operation of All Club Vehicles” document.
Beginning of the Day
Arrive for duty by 08:00 to assist the Instructor in Charge (I/C).
- Hangar unpacking and packing is the responsibility of an instructor, or a qualified pilot authorised by an instructor and present on the field.
- No unqualified or unauthorised member may remove any club vehicle or aircraft unsupervised.
- Ensure all aircraft and vehicles are DI’d (Daily Inspected).
- Collect the day’s paperwork (flying list and Ground Controller folder) and all radios, batteries, and parachutes.
- Ensure that the I/C Instructor has collected the box of student record cards from the CFI’s office.
- It is recommended that the Ground Controller wears a high-visibility yellow vest for easy identification.
The Instructor in Charge (I/C) will decide the field setup and conduct a morning briefing before flying begins. This briefing includes NOTAMs, weather, circuit details, and other relevant information.
Team Coordination:
- Identify the duty pilots/crew and confirm who is responsible for each role (including winch driver and BI).
- Delegate tasks and identify any ground training opportunities for the day.
- Follow up if a duty pilot or crew member does not show up (inform Nigel Blatchford if this becomes regular).
- Identify members not on the duty rota and match them with training opportunities.
During the Day
- Conduct a signal and radio check before flying begins.
- Manage the flying list and ensure logs are complete and legible.
- Solo pilots using the Junior glider should agree among themselves on the flying order and time allocation.
- Communicate with instructors to keep the launch queue moving efficiently.
- Monitor gliders, winch launches, and cable retrieves to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Supervise all club vehicles for safe and responsible use.
- Coordinate with the BI on managing trial flights.
- Supervise and monitor students, visitors, and the public around the launch area.
- Identify and arrange for training opportunities with competent members.
- Agree a lunch break with the I/C (flying through lunch may be required if sufficient crew are available).
End of the Day
- Once flying is complete, agree with the I/C when to begin packing up.
- Ensure flying logs are complete and posted on the relevant WhatsApp group.
- Check that no items or equipment are left on the airfield.
- Ensure an instructor is present during hangar packing.
- Ensure that the Instructors have collected the box of student record cards from the log hut and returned them to the CFI’s office.
- Clean the club gliders before putting them away.
- Report any defects (vehicles or gliders) using a pink report form and leave it in Julie’s office.
- Remove all radios, batteries, and parachutes and put them on charge in the clubhouse.
- Ensure that club vehicles are put on charge.
- Ensure that the log hut bin is emptied and that no rubbish remains in the log hut.
- Return the flying list/logs and Ground Controller folder to the clubhouse.
- Check that hangar doors are closed and locked and all lights are off.
Summary
The Ground Controller’s role is vital for safe, smooth, and enjoyable gliding operations. Be proactive, stay aware, and keep communication clear — you are the link between the ground and the air.
